World Cup Qualifiers 2018: Uganda’s Campaign in numbers

Uganda ended the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers on a high with an away point in Congo Brazzaville to emerge 2nd on the Group E log with 4 points behind Egypt. However, We take a look at the campaign that kicked off in November 2015 in facts and figures.

Uganda’s first match in the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers was a 1-0 win away against Togo in Lome, Farouk Miya scored the lone goal in the 39th minute. A 3-0 win in the return leg at Namboole meant that Uganda qualified for the last huddle of qualification and was pitted in Group E alongside Ghana, Congo Brazzaville and Egypt who eventually won the group on 13 points.

0. The number of send offs and penalties received by the Cranes. No Cranes player saw red in the entire qualifying campaign and they did no receive any penalties in the entire campaign.

1. The number of players to have played all the minutes in the World Cup campaign and that is Isaac Isinde, he played in the opening fixture against Togo in Lome up to the final fixture in Brazaville against Congo.

He is the only player to have played in every game of the campaign. Denis Onyango, Miya Farouk Joseph Ochaya, Murushid Jjuko and Godfrey Walusimbi come closer with 7 appearances each.

1. The number of penalties conceded by the cranes in the entire campaign. Denis Onyango saved Floyd Ayite’s spot kick following Diego Hamis’ foul on a Togolese forward.

2– Uganda has used 2 coaches through out the entire campaign, Milutin Sredojevic Micho and Moses Basena. Micho managed 4 games winning thrice and drawing only once. Basena managed 1 win against Egypt, 2 draws and a loss in Alexandria.

2– The number of goals Uganda Cranes has conceded in the entire campaign. Egypt’s Muhammad Salah and Marvin Boudry of Congo Brazzaville were the only player to have managed to score against Uganda.

4– Uganda had 4 different scorers with Farouk Miya being the top scorer on 4 goals, 3 of which came against Togo in the double header in 2015. Emmanuel Okwi, Geoffrey Massa and Milton Karisa got on the Score sheet once.

5– The number of consecutive games Uganda went without conceding any goal. It was Mohammed Salah’s strike in the 6th minute that put to an end of the Cranes proud streak.

7- The number of goals Uganda has scored through out the campaign, 4 of which came in the preminaly round against Togo, 2 against Congo Brazzaville and one against Egypt.

8– The total of the number of games Uganda has played registering 4 wins, 3 draws and one defeat.

13. The number of bookings received by the Uganda Cranes players. The most of which went to Murushid Juuko 3, Nico Wadada 2 and Khalid Aucho 2. The others went to Joseph Ochaya, Tonny Mawejje, Godfrey Walusimbi, Denis Onyango, and Emmanuel Okwi.

28– The number of Ugandan players to have played at least a minute in the 8 World Cup Qualifying games. These include;
