Why Kefa Kisala is only a scapegoat for Wakiso Giants’ problems

In the first place, he wasn’t the first choice for the job following the exit of Ibrahim Kirya and to the fans’ point of view, he was not the right choice to replace the much favoured Ibrahim Kirya who had led them to promotion.

Unaware of his coaching credentials, they (fans) felt it was wrong to let Kirya go and replace him with someone who did not connect well with their past.

Wakiso Giants had finalised with the appointment of Livingstone Mbabazi but a late turn of events saw the temperamental coach sign for Onduparaka instead.

Attempts to get Moses Basena turned futile with the former Cranes head coach opting to join Rwanda’s Sunrise FC leaving Kisala the best possible choice for Wakiso Giants.

His short tenure has yielded four wins, one draw and six defeats including a 2-0 loss to SC Villa, a 2-1 loss to Police FC and an uninspiring 3-0 drubbing at home to Express FC.

The latest string of poor results forced the club owner to succumb to fans’ pressure and henceforth welded the axe on Kefa Kisala, putting his reign to an untimely end.

A deeper scrutiny of events however reveals that Kisala’s sacking is only a symptom of more severe problems that root from mistakes done earlier in pre season.

UNREALISTIC DEMAND OF RESULTS

There is a muted belief that Wakiso Giants are already a big club which should be challenging for the top positions judging by their financial muscle and transfer business done in preseason.

According to the fans, Kisala was not supposed to lose any matches and achieve it in a fashionable style. Case in point was the hard earned 2-1 victory over Mbarara City at Wankulukuku.

Ibrahim Kirya led the team to promotion but he was relieved of his duties before the start of the season

Despite the team leading 1-0 at halftime, they relentlessly booed their coach every time he stood up to give instructions to the players. They displayed placards in dissatisfaction of his playing style even after the final whistle.

In response, Kisala reminded them that their team is a very young team and they should not expect miracles to happen overnight.

“I am not bothered by the fans’ reaction to the way things are going, I don’t blame them because their hope is always high but we are still a young team that is only under construction”

“With patience, we shall get to where they want us to be”.

THE TOO MANY NEW SIGNINGS

Maintaining momentum and building team cohesion are cardinal rules for any set up but this was neglected by the bosses at Wakiso Giants.

Close to 15 players were brought in and most of the players that went through the rigors of promotion were discarded.

MVP and top scorer Ivan Kiweewa was retained but only limited to cameo appearances from the bench.

Ivan Kiwewa was the fulcrum of the team but he has played a more cameo role this term

Captain Feni Ali has not played a game this term and neither did he train with the club. It is believed that his strained relationship with Kisala during their time at URA was the cause of the blackout.

Only Ayub Kisalita, Muwadda Kateregga, Fahad Kawooya, Hakim Senkumba and Hassan Wasswa managed to keep their places in the team.

The coach was also appointed after the team was assembled, it is quite hard to explain whether it was him who recommended their acquisition.

KISALA’S LAIDBACK CHARACTER

He is never seen in any confrontational scenarios with opposing coaches, match officials and even his players.

It is also assumed that some players have been more powerful than their coach because of the close friendship with club director Musa Sebulime.

Player power got ahead of him and thus lost the dressing room.

Other factors including injuries to senior players, playing home games away from home among others might have conspired to let him down.

WHAT NEXT FOR KISALA

With his vast experience and coaching qualities, he is most certainly likely to bounce back in the dugout. Tooro United are coachless following the resignation of Wasswa Bbosa and a few struggling teams may snap up his services to turn their fortunes around. He has coached at Masaka LC, URA FC, Express FC (twice) and BUL in the Uganda premier league.
