Who is Johnny Mckinstry, the new Cranes head coach?

John Mckinstry is a Northern Ireland national with vast experience in African football.

The UEFA Pro licensed coach was appointed to replace Frenchman Sabastien Desabre who recently stepped down from his role as Cranes manager and joined Egyptian club Pyramids FC.

The 34 year old has previously coached Sierra Leone and Rwanda national men’s senior teams.

At the age of twenty-eight, Mckinstry was appointed to be the head coach of Sierra Leone national team, becoming the youngest active international head coach.

In 2015, after Micho’s reign as Amavubi Stars head coach, Mckinstry was appointed to take over at the helms in Kigali.

During his time as head coach in Kigali, Mckinstry guided Rwanda to their first away win in a period of four years. It was a 1-0 Victory over Mozambique in 2017 in the opening round of the Africa cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Northern Irishman came close to winning the 2015 CECAFA cup hosted in Addis Ababa(Ethiopia) but fell to 1-0 defeat against the Cranes in the finals.

He defeated defending champions Kenya, hosts Ethiopia and Sudan along the way before falling short against regional giants Uganda in the finals.

However, Mckinstry was subsequently named coach of the tournament.

The new manager will be in charge of the Cranes for the next 3 years and will temporarily work with Abdallah Mubiru and Livingstone Mbabazi who have been serving on an interim basis.
