What we learned in SC Villa’s victory over Police FC

The record league champions SC Villa this evening grinded a hard earned victory over bogey side Police FC whom they hadn’t beaten in the previous six meetings.

It was Greek tactician Petros Koukouras’ first competitive match in charge since his appointment two months ago and he was lucky to move away with a positive result.

Here are a few highlights we managed to identify from their opening match of the season.

Joseph Kafumbe ensured that Villa did not miss Derrick Ndahiro

Villa play like a coached team

Unlike the previous few seasons where they huffed and puffed the ball in wonderland and expect a chance out of the blue, this Villa side plays like a team with a purpose.

They build attacks from the back and their full backs turn into wing backs when in possession. Fred Agandu and Joseph Kafumbe proved to be Villa’s main instigator of attacks.

The midfield trio of Amir Kakomo, Ali Bayo and Salim Abdallah have created a telethepatic understanding and the return to fitness of Isma Mugulusi, Ronald Sekiganda and the clearance of Travis Mutyaba promises big things ahead

Salim Abdallah seems to have come of age.

Many would be hard pressed to come to terms with the fact that this is Salim Abdallah’s 4th season in the topflight.

Abdallah orchestrated most of Villa’s attacks

He was promoted from the Villa youth team at the start of the 2017/18 by Eng. Ben Misagga and Wasswa Bbosa. He has since struggled to nail down a starting place due to the high turnover of coaches and instability in management at the club.

Last season he managed a few eye catching performances which included scoring match winners like the one against Wakiso Giants but if we are to go by today’s performance, he seems to have found a coach that duly understands his strengths.

Against Police, Villa’s attacks evolved around him and he got into goal scoring positions regularly. He almost scored a goal of the season contender when he struck Saddam Masereka’s perfectly weighed cross on the rebound but the ball went over the bar by inches.

Villa need a target man.

Isaac Ogwang started as the number nine against Police but the former Spartans striker is yet to find the confidence that caused controversy during his transfer to SC Villa last year. In fact he scored a brace against Mbarara City at Bombo but that’s the best we can recall from him.

His movements on and off the ball need to greatly improve.

New signing Charles Bbale is yet to achieve full fitness and youngster Oscar Mawa is played out on the wings. His stature at the moment can not support him as a target man.

Villa were lucky not to start the campaign against Vipers

Vipers have learnt how to beat Villa of recent and with all the problems that surrounded their camp, an opening match against Robertinho Martinez’ well oiled machine.

Vipers have been so ruthless this term and had they faced Villa on Tuesday, a massacre was bound to happen.

Villa were so lucky that by then, they had not been cleared which made a meeting with a less motivated Police their first opponents of the season.

This might be Goffin Oyirwoth’s breakthrough season.

The former Buddo S.S fast paced winger was first blooded by Kefa Kisala during his latest reign as Express FC head coach, he was signed alongside Sadiq Sekyembe and Isaac Ocholit but Kisala’s exit spelt spelt doom for the youngsters too.

Goffin was unlucky not to cap off a fine display with a goal

Kisala’s predecessors preferred proven and experienced players and Goffin sought refuge at Wakiso Giants, he was not considered for a licence and tries his luck at SC Villa.

Last season, he produced a few flashes of what he can do but this season, he looks to be in Petros Koukouras’ central plans.

Against Police, he was Villa’s biggest threat going forward, he has improved his decision making and can take on his man with ease.

A big season awaits

Abdallah Mubiru is also human anyway

Police FC tactician is a laid back soft spoken man, atleast to those who know him but this evening, as his team were on course to their fourth straight defeat of the new season, one Villa supporter continuously threw insults at him.

Mubiru paid a deaf ear but when center referee Ali Sabira blew the final whistle, Mubiru tried to take on the roudy fan man to man but the fela ran away for his life and the Police gaffer was consoled by his mates.
