Uganda beat Egypt 1-0 at Mandela National Stadium in Kampala to leapfrog Egypt at the summit of group E of the World Cup qualifiers.

Emmanuel Okwi’s superb left foot finish in the 51st minute was enough to seal victory for the Uganda cranes in a very closely contested match.

Uganda now have 7 points from 3 games and they have not conceded a goal in this campaign, Argentine born Hector Cuper is still adamant that Egypt are favourites to qualify for the tournament they last took part into in 1990.

“We tried to more than one way but we did not manage to score. The qualifiers are not over and we still have 9 points to play for. We will try to compensate in the next games and qualify for the World Cup.” Said Cuper after the match.

Cuper also reminded his critics by reiterating that Uganda is not an easy opponent as most want to put it, swift sports had earlier quoted Cuper saying that Uganda would be a difficult opponent due to the unpredictability of the new man in the dugout Moses Basena following the resignation of Micho.

Cuper added,

“It’s easy to criticize me and my players after this defeat but this is football it’s not played on paper, the match was very difficult, the playing surface wasn’t the best and we couldn’t play our game which made it very complicated for us but we shall correct these mistakes in Alexandria”.

Cuper insisted that he will make two or three changes to the team that started in Kampala when Egypt host Uganda in the return match at the Estadio Borg El Arab in Alexandria next week on Tuesday.
