VIPERS SC 1-0 EL MERRIEKH (Agg 2-2, Vipers advance on away goal)
Abraham Ndugwa’s 46th minute strike broke an organized El Merriekh defence to send the Uganda champions to the final qualification round of the CAF champions league.
Armoured with Mzee Dan Sserunkuuma’s away goal in Khartoum, Vipers knew what was expected of them and that was winning with an unanswered goal to advance.
The hosts were however forced to sit back and wait to attack on the counter in order to beat their visibly superior opponents.
The first period was mostly played at Vipers’ end but the visitors failed to beat a steadily positioned Bashir Ssekagya
El Merriekh also employed the infamous tactic of interrupting play and the rhythm of the game by falling to the ground even with the slightest of touches, their strategy paid off in the first 45 minutes.
Returning for the second period, Vipers moment presented it’s self and it fell to Abraham Ndugwa who made no mistake but to bury it home.
Javier Martinez made a double substitution with the goal scorer making way for Noah Wafula and Davis Kasirye coming on for Moses Waiswa in the 59th minute.
El Merriekh tried to push for a break through but Vipers held on to their lead and ultimately sealed qualification to the next round and they will take on Algeria’s Club CS Constantine on the weekend of December 14th-16th.
