URA defeat Vipers to draw title race wide open

DAVID GOMBE

URA FC beat Vipers SC 3-1 at Arena of Visions to blow title race wide open.

Goals from Saidi Kyeyune, Daniel Isiagi and second half substitute Cromwell Rwothomio inspired Sam Ssimbwa’s charges to a deserved win on Friday.

Fahad Bayo converted from the spot early in the second half for Vipers only goal of the evening.

The league leaders have only to blame themselves for offering KCCA FC a lifeline in the title race. The injured Halid Lwaliwa was sorely missed in a lethargic performance.

URA, in contrast, were excellent in every department. They certainly did not resemble a team that lost to 10 man Busoga United on Tuesday.

The outstanding Kyeyune gave the home side the lead in 14th minute off a Mike Birungi assist.

Three minutes later, Isiagi extended their advantage taping home a Joachim Ojera quality cross.

In the 50th minute, referee Ashadu Ssemere pointed to the spot after URA FC defender Hood Mulikyi brought down Milton Karisa. Bayo stepped up to score his 12 goal of the campaign.

On the 70th minute mark, URA were also awarded a penalty when Paul Willa handled a Brian Majwega cross.

Rwothomio who replaced Isiagi in the second period was entrusted with the responsibility but his kick was saved by goalie Fabien Mutombora.

With only 16 minutes to normal time, Rwothomio headed past Mutombora to restore the revenue collectors two goal advantage.

This was Fred Kajoba’s first defeat since taking over from Edward Golola. Before he had two wins and two draws. His side remain top with 50 points on the log.

URA FC are fourth placed with 37 points in 23 games this season.

URA FC will be away to Express FC next Tuesday while Vipers SC will host Maroons FC the following day.
