UPDF wins silver in East Africa Military games.

Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) emerged second to clinch silver in football during the recently concluded East African Military games held in Burundi.

The Uganda army football team which is the equivalent of the Uganda Premier League club UPDF fc, emerged runners up with 5 points 2 behind eventual winners Kenya.

In the absence of head coach Moses Basena who with the Cranes, the team was under the tutelage of his deputy John Kayanja who managed 1 victory and two draws. Uganda played a 1-1 against Tanzania in the first game with Kibirige Jimmy Lule scoring his maiden goal for the army.

The second match against Kenya produced the same result courtesy of a strike from long serving midfielder Robert Nakyenalire who also eventually emerged the top scorer with two goals.

The team then wrapped up the tournament with a resounding 3-0 win over the hosts on the closing day through goals from strikers Godfrey Wakaza, Julius Malingumu and Robert Nakyenalire.

In other events, Uganda won silver in netball and bronze in both athletics and volleyball while the overall standings saw Kenya finishing in the first position, Uganda the second, Tanzania the third and Burundi finished fourth.

These games are held on an annual basis and are intended to promote cohesion amongst East African countries. The next edition is designated for August 2018 in Kenya.
