UOC supports Uganda’s Tokyo Olympics bound group with relief funds

Due to the unprecedented financial and logistical turmoil in Sports caused by the horrendous Coronavirus pandemic lockdown in the country.

The Uganda Olympic Committee has come out to the rescue of athletes who qualified for Olympic games in Tokyo and their coaches with some Covid relief funds.

The development was confirmed by the UOC President and IOC member William Blick during the quarterly online council meeting that was held on Saturday.

“As the Uganda Olympic Committee, we have managed to assist 19 of our athletes that qualified for Olympic games with their coaches. Each athlete received Shs1.5M to help them during this horrible period.” We are also going to look at the extended family of athletes who are on the verge of qualification as well as their coaches and give them some assistance.” Stated Blick.

Athletes Joshua Cheptegei, Halimah Nakaayi, Winnie Nanyondo, Ronald Musagala, Albert Chemutai, Esther Chebet, Sarah Chelangat, Peruth Chemutai, Stella Chesang, Boxer Shadir Musa Bwogi and Rower Kathleen Noble are some of the Ugandan athletes who secured their slots to the games.

The Uganda Olympic Committee also remains optimistic that Sports activities will return very soon in the country.

National Council of Sports is also expected to assist its members Federations/Associations with a relief funds earlier next month.

For Starters, the International Olympic Commission and the Japanese government decided to postpone the biggest multi sports event (Olympic games) for the first time in its 124 year history.

As a result of the postponement of the Games due to COVID-19, the new dates for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games are 23 July to 8 August 2021.
