Uganda’s Crested Cranes have been drawn in Group C of the 2021 COSAFA Women’s Championship to be held between September 15th – 26th at the Nelson Mandela Bay in South Africa.
The Crested Cranes are one of the three guest nations in this tournament and will face Zambia’s Copper Queens, Namibia and Eswatini.
This is the second time Crested Cranes will play in the tournament. The first one being in 2018 where they faced Namibia and Eswatini in Group C.
The Faridah Bulega coached team beat Eswatini 4-3 and drew 0-0 with Namibia before topping the group table with seven points.
Uganda won bronze in the tournament after beating Zambia 1-0 in the third place play off thanks to a Tracy Jones Akiror penalty.
South Africa’s Banyana Banyana, who have won the last four championships, have been drawn in Group A alongside Angola, Malawi and Mozambique.
Group B has two guest nations South Sudan and Tanzania who are pitted against Zimbabwe and Botswana.
Tanzania took part in the 2020 edition, while South Sudan is coached by former South Africa performance analyst Shilene Booysen, who was involved in a number of COSAFA Cup wins with Banyana Banyana.
The top placed team in each group will proceed to the semi finals and will be joined by one best-placed runner up.
This tournament will come just a month before the start of the qualifiers for the 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations that are scheduled to begin in October.
