Ugandan striker Romeo Sempiira is ready to break new grounds in China after joining Guiyang Hongrun Huagong FC, a club in the lower tier of first division.

Sempiira recently joined Guiyang Hongrun with former KCCA, Express and Kitara FC utility midfielder Rogers Lukwiya mid this year.

The combative striker passed through Friends of Football and Jogoo Young but also briefly played for Bunamwaya (now Vipers) under the tutelage of the late Charles Katumba.

He also featured for Moses Basena’s Simba FC and State House under Matia Lule.

Making an immediate impact at his new club and joining highly ranked clubs in China are some of Sempiira’s ultimate targets.

” As a player, I have toiled so hard to play on the top level so my ultimate target is playing on a more advanced level.” Sempiira says in an exclusive interview with Swift Sports.

” Guiyang is an ambitious club and I want to help them reach their targets. In the process, I want to uplift myself and join one of top clubs in the Chinese Super League like Evergrande (Guangzhou), Guoan (Beijing), SIPG (Shanghai) among others.”

He adds.

Sempiira and Lukwiya

Sempiira boldly says his target is achievable despite the cutthroat competition for playing slots among the foreign players.

” To play in China is not as hard as it might seem but the only big challenge arises from the foreign quota where a club is not allowed to name more than three foreigners in the starting line up. That implies that we the foreign players are given less chances of playing.”

” That makes the competition stiff because we have got very many players from South America, Africa and Europe all vying for playing time in China. Some of whom are established players and have played for bigger clubs across the world.”

Sempiira started his Chinese expeditions with Colliers Football Club in 2015-16 before joining Inter Heroes in the lower divisions where he played between 2016-18.

It was at Inter Heroes where Sempiira linked up with Lukwiya before joining Jianjie Bettiland FC, his immediate former club, in the 2018-19 season.

” It is a tough struggle to come this far. It calls for hard work and performing on the pitch when need be.”

” When I joined Guiyang, the club president tasked me to finish as the league top scorer because I have been emerging as one of the leading scorers in the previous seasons at my respective former clubs.” The striker asserts.

At Guiyang Hongrun Huagong, the Ugandan duo (Sempiira and Lukwiya) is being coached by former Real Madrid Academy coach Mariusz Mislura, a Polish tactician who has also managed at Pogon Szcecin in his native country.

Sempiira and Lukwiya are currently in a break but are expected to return to action when the league officially resumes on 20th October.
