Uganda withdraws from Women Afrobasket qualifiers due to financial constraints

The Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (FUBA) has confirmed the withdraw of the Gazelles from taking part in the forthcoming FIBA Women Afrobasket.

According to a statement released by the FUBA President Nasser Sserunjongi they have decided to withdraw from the zone five event due to financial constraints

“The Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations has today unfortunately made a difficult and painful decision to withdraw its participation from the Afrobasket qualifiers (Women) that will take place in Kigali Rwanda.”

“This decision has been made after failing to get the much needed financial support from the government.”

Uganda’s Women Senior Basketball team had confirmed participation in the event needed around Shs220m to facilitate their trip to Kigali.

Uganda was to face off with hosts Rwanda, Tanzania, South Sudan, Burundi and Kenya at the event will be staged in Kigali from 12th -17th July.

The winners in Kigali will qualify to Afrobasket where the top two teams get a ticket to one of the qualifying tournaments for the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.
