The Uganda Cranes host the Flames of Malawi at Namboole in their first ever home game since the 2019 AFCON final tournament in Egypt.

Uganda drew 0-0 with Burkina Faso in Ouogadougou on Wednesday while Malawi fought to a 1-0 victory over South Sudan the other Group B fixture.

The most recent meeting between Uganda and the COSAFA nation was a friendly match at the same venue and ended in a goalless draw last year on March 27th.

Uganda will come into this encounter with nothing to settle for but victory so as to get their 2021 qualification campaign going since they have taken part in the previous two final tournaments.

The match will also be Jonathan Mckinstry’s first home game as the Cranes head coach since taking charge in October.

McKinstry will have to negotiate the game without crafty winger Abdu Lumala and his Swedish based compatriot Alexis Bakka who didn’t travel with the team to Uganda from Burkina Faso due to documentation issues.

Dennis Onyango, the Cranes custodian and Captain is confident the team will win. He said;

“The players are hungry for more success. We’re yearning for more glory. We managed to get a point in Burkina Faso which was a great plus. The focus is now on Malawi. We played against them in a friendly game last year but it’s now a different game. We have the fire power now, we need to win our home games”.

William Kizito Luwagga is a top candidate who could be back into action to replace the unavailable Lumala in the offensive department while SC Vipers hotshot Fahad Bayo could step up for Alexis Bakka.

A win for the McKinstry charges will temporarily send them top of the group while Burkina Faso takes on South Sudan in the other group B game.

Probable Cranes line up:

Dennis Onyango (Captain & G.K), Bevis Mugabi, Joseph Ochaya, Murushid Jjuuko, Timothy Awany, Khalid Aucho, Mike Azira, William Kizito Luwagga, Farouk Miya, Emma Okwi and Patrick Kaddu.
