It’s astonishing that the record champions of the Uganda Cup, Express FC have in the last four seasons been eliminated from the domestic cup by Kitara FC on 3 occasions.
The first time the teams met was in the round of 64 in 2015 and Kitara emerged 1-0 victors. A year later, they met again in the round of 32, Express exited the competition after failing to honour a replay for the match that was abandoned with 6 minutes from normal time.
The big league outfit has today managed to extend their dominance over Express for the third successful time with a 4-3 win in an epic penalty shoot out at Booma grounds in Hoima.
Express were given a deserved lead by inform striker Alfred Leku on 31 minutes.
However, former Express midfielder Derrick Tekwo had different ideas as he levelled matters for the home side at the hour mark smashing home a powerful shot off a Julius Rulinda spade work.
There was not to come more goals to separate the two sides and penalty spots were required to determine who proceeds to the round of 16.
Ayub Kisalita, Julius Ntambi and Omar Hitimana converted flawlessly and Derrick Tekwo, Max Owachi, Oscar Munihizi and hard tackler Pius Mbidde netted for Kitara FC.
David Ndihabwe and goalscorer Alfred Leku missed for Express whereas Kitara’s Swadick Collins was denied by Godwin Buule.
The defeat for the 10 time holders is reminiscent of the previous exits in 2015 and 2016 both at the hands of Kitara FC.
It’s also the second time in this campaign that the Hoima based outfit has cruised to the next stage through spot kicks having edged Koboko Raising Stars 7-6 in the previous round.
