UGANDA CUP : Kajjansi United eject favourites Vipers on penalties

Buganda Regional League side Kajjansi United eliminated their neighbours and tournament favourites Vipers courtesy of an 8-7 penalty shoot out victory following a one-all draw in normal time.

Vipers rallied through Fahad Bayo in the second after Michael Male had put the Kajjansi outfit ahead in the opening half.

The game was later decided by the kicks from the penalty mark where Kajjansi flawlessly converted all their eight kicks.

Goalkeeper Michael Kagiri was hero when he saved Umar Kyebatala’s penalty and subsequently sending the Kajjansi faithfuls into wild celebrations.

Marvin Nyanzi, Mike Lutaaya,Rashid Ssemwogerere, Edgar Luzige, Joseph Shisha, Ashraf Mbaziira, Isaac Balyejusa and Ronald Kizito all scored for the winning side.

Bayo, Geoffrey Wasswa, Farouk Musisi, Rahmat Ssenfuka, Paul Mucurezi, Abraham Ndugwa and Jacob Okao scored for Vipers.

With the memories of a 1-0 defeat to rivals SC Villa, Vipers fans confronted their coach Edward Golola faulting him for the club’s slip in performance which thereafter prompted for security intervention at Wankulukuku.

The shocking defeat to the Venoms was reminiscent of that of 2015 when Kampala Regional League club Kyambogo FC ejected the three time league champions courtesy of an epic penalty shoot out at Banda.

Vipers were not the only Uganda Premier League side to be eliminated on the evening, Busoga United and Onduparaka followed the same route.

Bugamba FC from Rwampara defeated the Caterpillars 1-0 while Busoga United succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to Busia Young at the Madibira grounds.

Kajjansi, Busia Young and Bugamba join Mbarara City, Tooro United, Kigezi Homeboyz and holders Proline in the Round of 32 stage.

The tournament will resume on Thursday with five games on the cards. The match between Kataka FC and Kampala University has been postponed from Thursday to Sunday.
