Former Uganda Cranes captain and team manager Jimmy Kirunda has died aged 70, on Monday afternoon.

Kirunda collapsed and died near Hotel La Grande in Bwaise, Kampala.

As a player, Kirunda played in five Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaigns and captained Uganda in three of the final championships.

In fact, Kirunda scored the all important goal that sent Uganda to the 1978 AFCON tournament against Ethiopia.

He was captain of Uganda Cranes for ten years and won the CECAFA championship on five occasions (1969, 1970, 1973, 1976 and 1977)

Kirunda is one the players that played for all the VEK teams that is Express, KCCA and SC Villa and won four league titles and three Uganda Cups.

Notably, he was top scorer of the 1978 Uganda Super League with 32 goals.

As Cranes Team Manager, he won three CECAFA Cup titles (1989, 1990 & 1992).
