Uganda beat Morocco to qualify for FIBA AfroBasket


The Uganda National Basketball men’s team (Silverbacks) progressed to the 2021 FIBA AfroBasket in Kigali, Rwanda after after an astonishing performance against Morocco at the FIBA AfroBasket 2021 Qualifiers in Rabat.

Uganda beat Morocco 77-65 on Thursday to secure a place in this year’s AfroBasket.

Following their victory against Morocco, the Silverbacks finish second in Group E behind Egypt who had already prevailed to the final tournament.

Uganda also advances to the AfroBasket finals for the third consecutive time after appearances in 2017 and 2019.

Cape Verde finished third in the group and also booked a ticket to the continental showpiece while Morocco were bottom placed.

Arthur Kaluma led the way with 20 points while Ishmael Wainright scored a 11-point and 12-rebound double double for the Silverbacks.

Before Thursday’s victory, Uganda managed three victories in November last year in the three games they played in the first window in Cairo.

Uganda will be in Group D of the FIBA AfroBasket that has Senegal, Cameroon and South Sudan. The championship is scheduled for August 24th to September 5th, 2021.
