Top of the table clash as Vipers host URA in a potential title decider

Danito NSUBUGA

This evening, the most consistent sides of the current season will face off at the St. Mary’s stadium in Kitende.

Vipers are fresh from a statement making victory over pretenders KCCA at Lugogo whereas URA had a soft sail against Onduparaka at Ndejje.

The battle will not only be between the two teams but also a mini battle will take place between top scorers Yunus Sentamu and Steven Mukwala, a former Vipers striker who is also vying to defend his crown after winning the golden boot while playing for Maroons on loan last season. He is only 2 goals behind Sentamu at 13.

The key stats

Only Express FC has conceded the least number of goals than URA and Vipers with 14 and 16 respectively.

However, no team has scored more goals this term than Vipers SC. They have scored 49 times against URA’s meager 35.

The reverse fixture at the Arena of Visions was bossed by URA courtesy of goals from Shafiq Kagimu and Steven Mukwala. Vipers’ consolation was scored by Ceaser Manzoki.

Last 6 meetings at Kitende

Vipers 1-0 URA
Vipers 1-2 URA
Vipers 1-2 URA
Vipers 1-0 URA

Vipers 2-2 URA

No team has won more home games than Vipers this season, not until recently against Express that they lost their only 1 game while playing at St. Mary’s. They have won 9 times and only drawn once.

On the contrary, URA have the best away form in the league, they have won 7 times and drawn thrice with just a single loss while playing away from the Arena of Visions.

Team news:

Save for Dan Mzee Serunkuuma who has just returned to light gym training from a thigh injury, Fred Kajoba has a full squad available for selection.

Sam Ssimbwa welcomes back striker Rwothomio Cromwell. He has missed three league games through injury.

Midfielder Julius Mutyaba also makes his return after getting stretchered off during the 3-1 win over BUL early in May.

What the coaches say

Fred Kajoba, Vipers SC:

“The quality and character is in the squad we have showed since the league kicked off and it has helped us in many games. Now we have to show it even in the remaining games until the campaign is over.”

“All our matches are important, so we are not selecting which one is more vital and we are looking forward to playing them all.”

Kajoba told www.viperssc.co.ug

Sam Ssimbwa, URA FC

“This is the game I believe all fans have been waiting for. We are in good shape despite the fatigue, I can say that my team is ready for the challenge in reference to our previous league games.”

Ssimbwa said as quoted by www.urafc.co.ug
