Edward Golola’s Tooro United have wasted a massive opportunity to seal their place in next season’s Uganda Premier league.
Needing victory against relegation fighting Luwero United to be announced promoted, Tooro were presented with a chance by referee Ronald Kirangwa to register the much desired penalty but they blew it away.
Former Vipers striker Denis Ojara was fouled into the forbidden area deep in the dying minutes of the game and referee Ronald Kirangwa pointed to the spot.
Ojara stood up to take the resultant penalty but Luwero goal keeper Herman Mugoya went the right way and stopped the ball.
Tooro were second time lucky when the assistant referee spotted Mugoya’s early movement before the ball had been struck .
A retake was called and Toor United asked Isaac Mpagi to take the penalty. Mpagi struck the ball into the same direction and this time Mugoya didn’t even break a sweet in collecting the ball to safety.
This incident instigated Luwero United players and coaches to express their exasperation towards Kirangwa woth some of them opting to move off the field. Their head coach was asked to stay away from the line and the match proceeded on.
5 minutes earlier to the penalty decision, Luwero’s Joseph Nkabirwa wasted a chance that would have stole all the 3 points for.his team when he found himself unmarked on a counter attack but he failed to collect himself and bury the opportunity away.
Topscorer Marvin Oshaba was a shadow of his usual self after also wasting a series of key scoring opportunities. He was withdrawn with 10 minutes to go.
Tooro United will have wait on the final day of the regular season to see if they are promoted automatically. They host Kigezi Homeboyz at Wankulukuku on Sunday.
Tooro’s closest challengers Proline FC won their game and closed the gap to a single point.
Luwero have also done themselves a huge favor as regards safety. They will host Ndejje University at home on the final day.
