The Buganda kingdom Katikiro Charles Peter Mayiga has launched the 2018 edition of the Airtel Masaza cup tournament at Bulange Mengo.
The prestigious tournament which is scheduled to kick off on June 23rd will be sponsored by telecommunications gurus Airtel Uganda who signed a 1.2 billion sponsorship deal for 3 years last year.
Mr. V.G. Somasekhar the Airtel Uganda Managing Director handed over a dummy cheque of 400 millions to the Katikiro. The 400 millions will cover this year’s tournament.
” This tournament boosts talent and creates unity and I encourage everyone to participate either as a player or as fan.” The Katikiro urged the masses
The eventual winners will walk away with 10 million shillings as prize money, the losing finalists will get 7 millions whereas the third and fourth will earn 5 and 3 millions respectively.
Just like in the previous edition, each team will get 5 millions to cater for preparations and 1 million for every stage they progress to.
Among the new developments, the top scorer of this year’s edition will win himself a motorcycle from Yamaha.
With effect from this year’s edition, no player will be allowed to player in the tournament for more than 4 years.
Defending champions and record holders Gomba will play the opening match against Buweekula on Saturday 23rd June at Kabulasoke.
This prestigious tournament has given rise to many stars like Tony Mawejje, Diego Hamis Kiiza, Mike Serumaga, Emmanuel Okwi, Brian Umony, Robert Odongkara, Joseph Ochaya, Godfrey Walusimbi, Miya Farouk, Isaac Muleme, Yasser Mugerwa, Francis Olaki among others.
