TANZANIA: Matia Lule condemns Simba to first defeat of the season

Matia Lule's men held on until the final whistle and subsequently registered their first ever win over Simba since 2015. Prior to the game, Mbeya had lost 11 of the 12 previous meetings against Simba SC.

Matia Lule’s Mbeya City Council FC stunned defending champions Simba SC 1-0 in Tanzania’s NBC Premier League at the Sokoine Stadium in Mbeya.

The defeat was Simba’s first this season in the 11 games they have played.

Striker Paul Nonga scored the lone goal of the game in the 20th minute.

Mbeya City were reduced to 10 men in the 43rd minute as their skipper Mpoki Mwakinyuke was sent off for a second bookable offense on Congolese striker Chrispin Mugalu.

Despite the numerical advantage, Simba failed to find an equalizer in the second half.

The defending champions were awarded a penalty in the 45th minute following a handball in the box but Mugalu failed to convert as his strike hit the lower post.

The win took Mbeya City back to the third place on the table with 19 points from 12 games while Simba remained second with 24 points.

While Simba and Mbeya have lost once this term, table leaders Yanga SC remain the only unbeaten team in the league and have garnered 32 points from 12 games.

Matia Lule joined Mbeya City mid way last season and helped them beat relegation. He is currently deputized by fellow countrymen Paul Kiwanuka as his immediate assistant and Ben Kalama as the goalkeepers coach.

They are expected to be back in action when they take on Ruvu Shooting on Thursday 20th January.

Simba will seek redemption when they take on Mtibwa Sugar on Saturday 22nd January.
