Rwanda Primus League side AS Kigali has expressed interest in signing free agent Samuel Kato Nemeyimana, Swift Sports has learnt.
Swift Sports understands that the Rwandan club has already tabled an offer for Kato who is now not attached to any club after leaving KCCA FC.
The lanky central defender was officially released by KCCA early this week following a mutual consent to terminate his employment contract.
He has been linked to a move to join Police FC and Soltilo Bright Stars but close sources reveal that AS Kigali are the favourites to capture his signature.
Kato joined KCCA in 2018 but had to wait until 2019 to play for KCCA. He played an integral role as the club won the 2019 CECAFA Kagame Cup in Rwanda.
His display in the regional tournament subsequently garnered interest from Rwandan champions APR who reportedly tabled a $50,000 bid for him but KCCA were adamant to sell him.
Born to a Rwandan father and a Ugandan mother, Kato previously represented the Uganda national U17 The Cubs in 2014.
In case, he joins AS Kigali, Kato will become the third player to switch from the Uganda Premier to the Rwandan league in the past three months.
Others are striker Ben Ocen and right back Dennis Rukundo who joined Musanze FC and AS Kigali respectively on two year deals each.
AS Kigali finished runners up in Rwanda’s Primus League last season and will once again represent the country in the CAF Confederation Cup.
The Citizens will face Olympique de Missiri Sima of Comoros in the preliminary round where the aggregate winners will play against DR Congo’s DC Motema Pembe.
