RWANDA: Okwi stings APR to draw title race wide open

Emmanuel Okwi put up a starring performance as Kiyovu SC beat rivals and defending champions APR 2-1 in the Rwanda Primus League in Kigali.

The Uganda Cranes skipper scored a goal and won a penalty for the winning side.

He was brought down in the box by Almable Nsabimana in the 15th minute and the resultant penalty was flawlessly converted by Abedi Bigirimana.

Okwi made it 2-0 for Kiyovu with a sublime free kick from about 25 yards in the 29th minute.

He almost tripled the scores from close range but his effort came off the post in the 34th minute.

APR pulled one back through Fitina Ombolenga in the 57th minute which later turned out to be a mere consolation.

The result took Kiyovu level on points, 60 with APR with only three games to go. The two sides are separated by goal difference with APR boosting of a slightly superior (+23) compared to Kiyovu’s (+22).

Okwi has now scored five goals for Kiyovu. His compatriot and teammate Muzamir Mutyaba also played a part in the crucial victory.

Kiyovu will play against Etoile de L’est, Espoir FC and Marines FC in the final three games while APR will have to face Gorilla FC, AS Kigali and Rwanda Police.

Elsewhere, Ben Ocen came off the bench to score an equalizer for Musanze FC who held Rayon Sports to a 1-1 draw.

Musa Esenu was sparingly used and had to start on the bench for Rayon Sports in consideration for the club’s crucial semi final duel against APR in the Peace Cup on Thursday.
