Peruth Chemutai has become the first female Uganda to win a Gold medal at the Olympic games.

Chemutai magnificently clinched the 3000m steeplechase Gold at a time of 9:01:45 in the ongoing Olympics at the Olympic Stadium in Japan.

Who is Peruth Chemutai?

Uganda’s golden girl (Courtesy Photo)She is a 22 year old Ugandan lady having been born on 10th, July, 1999.

The steeplechase runner was born in Bukwo district and begun her in her home district Athletics Championships eight years ago.

Chemutai participates in the Commonwealth Youth Games in Apia where she won silver medals in both 1500m and 3000m.

The 2016 IAAF Championships held in Bydgoszcz in Poland saw the Ugandan settle for a 7th position in the Women’s 3000M steeplechase.

Chemutai celebrates her maiden achievement

In 2017, she took part in the Junior Women’s race of the IAAF World Cross Country Championships at Kololo in Kampala. She finished in the 7th position.

Chemutai also claimed silver in 2018 at the World Junior Championships in the 3000m steeplechase before setting a National record time of 9:07:94 seven days later in the Monaco Diamond League.

The time at which the 22 year old Police woman clinched Gold in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (9:01:45) is so far her best and a new National record.

This is Uganda’s 10th medal in the Olympic history and the third Gold at the games after John Akii Bua (1972 and Stephen Kiprotich (2012).
