Onyango and Uganda Cranes nominated in the 2018 CAF Awards


Denis Masinde Onyango and the Uganda national team The Cranes have been shortlisted in the 2018 CAF Awards nominees released by the continental football ruling body on Friday 30th November.

Onyango together with 33 other players, has been nominated for the African Player of the year award while The Cranes has been shortlisted in the Men’s national team of the year category.

Onyango has been an integral figure in Uganda’s flawless run back to the Africa Cup of Nations and remains the only goalkeeper yet to concede a goal in the ongoing qualification campaign.

The Ugandan shot stopper will have to compete with players like Mohamed Salah, Pierre Emmerick Aubameyang, Riyad Mahrez, Sadio Mane and Kalidou Koulibaly among others.

Just like Onyango who won the now defunct African player of the year based in Africa award of 2016, The Cranes also scooped the national team of the year award two years ago.

The Cranes will this time round face competition from Guinea Bissau, Madagascar, Mauritania, Zimbabwe’s Mighty Warriors and East African neighbors the Harambee Stars of Kenya.

The other bunch of nominees released include nominees for the Women’s African Player of the year, Youth player of the year, Coach of the year for both Male and Female and Women’s national team of the year.

The winners for the African player of the year and Women’s player of the year will be decided by the CAF technical & development committee, Media Experts, Legends, coaches of the quarterfinalists of the CAF inter-club competitions and Coaches and Captains of the 54 African national teams.

The Awards Gala, to honour footballers and officials who distinguished themselves during the year under review, will be held on Tuesday, 8 January 2019 in the Senegal capital city of Dakar.
