Rower Kathleen Noble’s chances of winning a medal for Uganda at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics came to an end after she fell short in the women’s single sculls Repêchage Heat 3 today morning.

Cuba’s Venega Cancio won the race with 8:17:30 followed by Hong Kong’s W.Y.W Hung in second place with 8:23:58.

Uganda’s Kathleen Noble came third with 8:36:01 just behind Hong Kong’s W.Y.W Hung.

Noble is only left to compete in the E/F semi finals which will take place tomorrow.

The E/F semifinals will determine the ultimate rankings for rowers out of the medal contention.

This was Uganda’s second attempt for a medal in rowing after Noble had missed out on the first try but qualified for a repêchage.

A repêchage in rowing is a contest in which the best-placed of those who failed to win heats compete for a place in the next round.

Noble is the first ever Ugandan rower to compete at the Olympics. She qualified for the Games in October 2019 after winning the women’s single scull B-final in Tunisia ahead of rowers from Togo and Nigeria in 8 minutes and 36 seconds.

The 26 year old was born to missionary parents Gerry and Moira Noble in Luwero district.

She has previously represented Uganda in swimming and made national records in the 50m freestyle and 50 butterfly during the 2012 World Championships in Turkey
