Okwi picks positives from Uganda’s loss to South Africa

Prior to the match, 6 players including Brighton and Hove star Percy Tau withdrew from the squad after testing positive for COVID, Head coach Hugo Broos was also absent from duty after being asked to wait for his second COVID-19 jab in Belgium


The Cranes may have lost to a second string South African side, new captain Emmanuel Okwi insists that all was not lost .

Uganda surrendered an early lead which they held onto until the 60th minute when two South Africa substitutes Thabiso Kutumela and Evidence Makgopa combined to overturn the result.

“I would like to thank God that we finished the game without any serious injuries ”

“The Game has been important in that we have observed what we have a lot to do in the coming qualifiers”

Okwi said after the match in a video posted on the FUFA handle

” There were so many positives, we had a good game and scored some good goals. The new boys made a good account of themselves too”.

He added.

Ibrahim Orit put Uganda infront on 18 minutes before Abdul Lumala scored his first national team goal when he came on for Allan Okello.

The Captain also made way for debutant Steven Mukwala in the 65th minute.

Uganda will convene again in September to begin their campaign of qualifying for Qatar 2022
