Ronald Musagala dropped out of the Men’s 1500m third Heat on Tuesday morning to miss a place in the semifinal.
The Ugandan middle distance runner’s search for an Olympic medal prematurely ended when he suffered a hamstring.
He needed to finish among the top six in his heat to book a place in the semis.
This was Musagala’s ninth straight major championship for Uganda since the 2013 Moscow World Championships.
Great Britain’s Jake Heyward won the heat while 3000m Men’s Olympic gold medalist El Bakkali Soufiane from Morocco did not finish as well.
Meanwhile, in the Women’s 400m heat, Uganda’s Shida Leni finishes sixth in a time of 52.48 in her heat.
Leni however became Uganda’s first female sprinter at the Olympics since Justine Bayigga at the Beijing games in 2008.
American iconic female athlete Alyson Felix won the heat and is just a medal away to become the most decorated track and field athlete in Olympic history.
