Uganda head coach Johnathan McKinstray has played down claims that Uganda did not prepare enough for South Sudan’s double header due to complacency.

The Northern Irishman insists that his team and the federation did everything in their powers to ensure that maximum points are gained out of this tie.

“We looked at South Sudan in the same capacity we would look at Burkina Faso or Egypt or Nigeria. Our approach can not change and will not change. We had a 30 page scouting report on every South Sudanese player”.

Following Uganda’s results in the opening two fixtures, it was nearly obvious that the Cranes would easily bag the 6 points at stake and seal qualification for the tournament to be hosted by Cameroon in 2022.

“I know the players worked hard to try and put up a show that people want but today we fell short. We have to go back and look at ourselves ”

“If we are to pick any positives from this match, it would be that it humbled all of us and we took this match seriously, we prepared seriously and no body can say we were casual but for whatever reason we never got the desired result”.

“If you get a result like this for Uganda, it’s not good enough and the execution wasn’t good enough”

“We have to consider ourselves lucky because of the result in the other game. We have two huge games coming up and I am sure these guys are going to fight back and we are going to get back on track”

McKinstry’s blushes were spared by the result in Blantyre where Malawi held Burkina Faso to a goalless draw, keeping Uganda’s chances very much alive.

The Crane’s next match in group B will not come until March next year when they host Burkina Faso in Kampala
