On 15th January 2020 CAF confirmed that the 2021 AFCON will be played between January and February due to concerns over the hot weather in the host nation Cameroon in June and July.

English club Liverpool FC are one of the teams that boast of one of the highest number of African stars in their squad including the reigning African player of the year Sadio Mane.

Others are Egypt’s Mohammed Salah, and Guine’s Naby Keita.

” For us it’s a catastrophe. If we say a player can’t go, he’s suspended. How can the club who pay his salary not decide? If he is injured and we say he can not play for us , we have to send him to Africa, so they have a look.”

Klopp told ESPN.

I couldn’t respect the tournament more than I do buy is an obvious problem to play a competition midway in a season. ”

He added

It is another tournament, there are too many of them. Another thing is it doesn’t help African player in the market. We won’t sell Sadio or Naby but if we bring someone in, it affects the decision. “
