Sofapaka and Ugandan coach Sam Simbwa has tipped his fellow countryman Mathias Kigonya to be among the front runners for this season’s golden boot in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) despite being a goalkeeper.
Simbwa’s remarks came on the aftermath of his side’s 2-0 humbling of Nakumatt FC at the Ruaraka grounds in a match where Mathias Kigonya scored his third goal of the season.
“Kigonya can be among the top scorers in this league because he is one of the best penalty takers around. If we get 10 penalties through the course of the season I have no doubt that he will bury all of them,” Simbwa said while addressing the media.
The former Bright Stars and Soana FC goalkeeper has swiftly established himself as Sofapaka’s reliable penalty taker and is currently the team’s joint top scorer tied with his compatriot Umar Kasumba on 3 goals each.
His first goal came in a 3-1 defeat to Mathare United, the second came against 5-4 win over Tusker.
Nakumatt 0-2 Sofapaka
Nakumatt’s Eugen Ambulwa gave Sofapaka’s an early lead in the 3rd minute when he headed the ball in his own net following a well delivered free kick from Rogers Aloro.
Kigonya stretched the lead when he stepped up to convert from the spot 4 minutes later capitalizing on a Muhamed Nigol hand ball in the forbidden area.
Nakumatt missed a chance to reduce on the 2 goal deficit when their forward Brian Nyakan failed to dispatch a penalty kick in the 41st minute following a foul in the goal area. His goal bound effort from 12 yards unfortunately hit the left post with Kigonya already beaten.
The pursuit for a consolation in the second half saw Nakumatt putting up a string of goal attempts but the Ugandan glovesman stood tall to deny them.
Ugandan players Rogers Aloro and Umar Kasumba also featured for the 2009 KPL champions for the entire 90 minutes.
The victory propels Sofapaka to the 4th place on 16 points garnered from 8 games played. They sit 3 points adrift the log leaders and defending champions Gor Mahia who have played a game less.
Sam Simbwa’s men will take on Nzoia Sugar in their subsequent league fixture on Wednesday 4th April at the Ruaraka grounds.
