Ahead of their group A opener against Botswana’s Township Rollers, KCCA FC coach Mike Mutebi has called upon his “Young” team to enjoy the experience of playing in the group stages of Africa’s moat glamorous competition for the first time.
” We are glad to be here, it’s a fantastic weather and pleasant people. It’s going to be our first time in the group stages of the champions league. We missed out last year after being eliminated by Mamelodi Sundowns but here we are as the team with the youngest squad, an average of 21 and all locally bred”.
“We, alongside township Rollers are the novices of the group, everyone will be looking upon getting points off us as the underdogs but we are ready for the experience.”
The head coach however tried to play down the pressure on team, insisting that his young team will be granted room to enjoy their adventure with only organic responsibility to allow them grow into one of the biggest power houses on the continent.
“Most of the boys are from the club’s academy side and we are the only team in the world that has managed to promote 11 players from the academy, only Barcelona did it in 2008.”
” We build basing on the Barcelona blue print, and I am proud to have been schooled from there. We are very excited that we are going to rub shoulders with the best on the continent, which will give us experience as a young team growing”.
Mutebi commended the good hospitality spirit and gesture extended to his contingent since their arrival in Gaborone. He added,
” We have been looked after well, everything has been provided and we are satisfied, let’s hope all will be transferred to the pitch tomorrow . We expect a very good match, Rollers are an attacking team that has scored in every home match. ”
KCCA are in group A of the CAF champions league, alongside Egyptian bigwigs Al Ahly, Esperance FC of Tunisia and Township Rollers.
