KCCA close in on Vipers with brilliant victory over Onduparaka

Danito NSUBUGA

Of course they have always beaten them every time Onduparaka has visited Lugogo but this time, the pressure was high on KCCA as they aspired to close the gap on table leaders Vipers SC who stumbled against UPDF last evening at Bombo.

Morley Byekwaso’s men knew that anything less than victory would be unwelcome but before them, was a side that they have already faced twice this season without victory.

In the first meeting at the Greenlight stadium, the match was abandoned in additional time and the rescheduled meeting also ended in a stalemate at Bombo.

With relegation looming, Lutalo’s men needed to write a better script than the old song of 7 losses from their previous 7 visits to Lugogo.

They started the game like a team determined to change the status quo but that agenda only lasted 35 minutes.

Onduparaka were caught on the break and Ashraf Mugume got brought down close to the 18 yard area.

Herbat Achai and Yassir Mugerwa stood behind the ball in preparation for execution.

Mugerwa made a slight touch on the ball towards Achai’s direction and the left footed defender struck the ball past Michael Kagiri to put KCCA into the lead.

Achai’s goal was a very timely pressure reliever for the Kasasiro boys and they managed to protect it until the half time break.

On resumption, KCCA continued pressing for the second and it was delivered 14 minutes after the restart with the in form Arafat Usama taking full advantage of a spill over by Michale Kagiri to consolidate the lead.

The hosts resorted to a more conservative approach of keeping possession but former Vipers winger Baden Ogama Mujahid had other ideas.

He powered home a none – stop rebound that beat Benjamin Ochan and kissed the net. At 2-1, Onduparaka’s hopes for a positive result were restored on the 83rd minute.

Hassan Jurua sealed KCCA’s victory

In search for a late leveller, the visitors left their defence exposed and Hassan Jurua capitalised on this to power home a 25 yard blockbuster to put paid onto the game.

KCCA are now on 39 points, just one behind Vipers SC.

Onduparaka remain 12 on the log but with only 17 points and they are separated by 14th placed Mbarara city with just a single point.
