Eric Kambale scored a hat trick as Express beat Kyetume FC 3-2 at the Nakisunga Grounds in Mukono.
Express emerged as the biggest beneficiaries of match day 23 after Vipers and URA settled for a one-all draw at Kitende in the other game played on the same day.
Wasswa Bbosa’s men had to redeem themselves from a false start that saw them concede an early goal courtesy of Ezra Kaye in the fourth minute.
Kambale levelled matters with his ninth goal of the season in the 16th minute and ensured the tie goes for the mandatory halftime break at 1-1.
The high rated striker gave Express the lead with a shot from outside the box that beat Emmanuel Were in goal a minute past the hour mark.
He completed his first ever hat trick for Express six minutes later when he tapped home on rebound after Mustafa Kiragga’s effort came off the post.
His hat trick took his season tally to 11 goals, three behind Vipers’ Yunus Sentamu who is the leading scorer.
Kyetume reduced the deficit through Ezra Bida who flawlessly converted from the penalty mark following Isa Lumu’s handball in the box in the 90th minute.
Wasswa Bbosa’s men remained third with 49 points but are now two points behind leaders URA, and one behind second placed Vipers.
The Red Eagles will intesify their chase for their first league title since 2012 on Saturday when they host UPDF at Wankulukuku.
Kyetume have only seven games to save their Premier League status. They sit 14th with 20 points and will play KCCA in their next game at Lugogo on Sunday.
