IOC Executive releases statement on Coronavirus and Olympic Games

On Monday, 9th March 2020 the Africa National Olympic Association Secretary Eng. Ahmed Abou Elgasim Hashim read the IOC statement on Coronavirus and the Olympic games in Tokyo at the press briefing held at Sheraton Hotel, Kampala.

ANOCA President Mustapha Berraf and Uganda Olympic Committee President William Blick attended the event.

The full IOC statement reads,

“The International Olympic committee (IOC) Executive Board expressed it’s full commitment to the success of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, slated for 24th July to 9th August.”

“The IOC EB heard a report on all the measures taken so far to address the Coronavirus situation, which was followed by a comprehensive discussion.”

“A joint task force had already been created in mid February involving the IOC, Tokyo 2020, the host City of Tokyo, the government of Japan and the World Health Organization (WHO).”

“The IOC EB appreciates and supports the measures being taken, which constitute an important part of Tokyo’s plans to host safe and secure games.” The IOC will continue to follow advice of WHO, as the leading United Nations agency on this topic.” Reads the report

The UOC President Blick was awarded with the ANOCA medal for his services towards the Olympic movement in Uganda.

President Yoweri Museveni Kaguta was also given the ANOCA order of Merit at a function that was held at State House, Entebbe on Monday evening.
