Golden girl Chemutai reveals what spurred her on to the remarkable achievement

Uganda’s golden girl Peruth Chemutai explained to the Olympic media that she refused to give up despite to the ride challenge posed by American Courtney Frerichs who pushed her to the limits.

Chemutai astonishingly clinched gold at the Tokyo games with a personal best time of 9:01.45 also a new national record and became Uganda’s first ever female Olympic champion.

She also won Uganda her first ever Olympic medal from a female participant since the country’s debut at the Melbourne 1956.

“I started my race well but after four laps America’s Courtney Frerichs passed me and I had the belief and didn’t give up.”

“I am extremely happy and proud of myself that I won a gold medal but as well surprised with this remarkable achievement.”

Expressed a delighted Chemutai.

The 22 year old Police Woman out sprinted American Courtney Frerichs with 250 metres to become the Olympic champion at the Olympic stadium in Tokyo on Wednesday.

Frerichs smiled with silver in 9:04.79 while Kenyan Hyvin Kiyeng finished third in a time of 9:05.39 to take home a bronze medal.

Chemutai joins Dorcus Inzikuru who is the other female Ugandan to have excelled in the 3000m steeplechase chase.

But Inzikuru’s success came at the IAAF World Championship that were held in Helsinki, Finland in 2005.

Meanwhile, Chemutai won Uganda her 10th medal in Olympic history and the third gold at the games after John Akii Bua (1972) and Stephen Kiprotich (2012).
