FWEL: Kawempe leave it late against resilient Ajax Queens, Kampala Queens clinch log summit

Anita Namata scored a late header as holders Kawempe Muslim laboured to a 1-0 victory over fighting Ajax Queens at the school valley playground on Sunday.

The school side completed the first round on a high with a whooping 19 points from 7 games played to sit comfortably on the top of the Victoria group table.

Kawempe Muslim’s lead striker Juliet Nalukenge was responsible for a half time stalemate after squandering two glorious goal scoring chances on succession early in the first half.

Annet Namwenge was also at fault for failing to put Ajax Queens in the lead with only Juliet Adeke the Kawempe custodian in her way moments after the resumption.

With the game seemingly destined for a stalemate, Nalukenge shrewdly outpaced her marker Phiona Nabbumba down the left flank to set up Namata who perfectly headed home the elusive goal.

The in-form diminutive Kawempe Muslim winger has now scored five goals, three of which have come in the last three games. She vowed to replicate her scoring form in the second half of the season,

” It hasn’t been an easy game but the good thing is that we managed to win. I feel enthused about scoring because I have only missed out on scoring in only two games. I want to replicate that account come the second round. “

Namata told this website.

Phiona Nabbumba the captain of Ajax Queens who featured in the central defence on the evening credited her team’s loss to ill luck,

Nabbumba said,

” We played a fantastic game with both sides creating scoring chances unfortunately our opponents were luckier than us and scored that lone goal that determined the scoreline.

The slim defeat meant Ajax Queens finish the half season in the 5th place with 9 points from 7 games played.

Elsewhere in the same group (Victoria), Masindi outfit Lady Doves FC edged fellow debutants Dynamic SS Jjeza 1-0 courtesy of Lydia Nandera to finish second with 13 points, 6 behind the Kawempe pacesetters.

At Wakisha grounds, She Corporates squandered a 2-0 half-time lead to share spoils with Rines SS WFC. Tina Nambirigge and Sarah Namulindwa scored for the Ali Zzinda coached team but Bridget Nalukenge and Halima Nanteza leveled matters for the home side.

Muteesa I Royal University defeated Asubo-Gafford Ladies by Habibah Nakayobyo ‘s solitary goal to sit 3rd on the table with 10 points.

Action in the Elizabeth group saw UCU Lady Cardinals lose 2-1 to Shadia Nankya’s inspired Uganda Martyrs’ side.

The 2018 FUFA Awards runner up was on the score sheet for the fifth time this season together with her namesake Rashidah (Nankya) while Hasifa Nassuna was on target for the Lady Cardinals.

Defeat means for the University side now means no team is unbeaten in the Elizabeth group unlike the Victoria pool where Kawempe and Lady Doves are yet to taste defeat.

Farida Bulega’s Kampala Queens humbled Bugiri side Town View 4-2 to clinch the top of the table with 14 points accumulated from 7 outings.

Zainah Namuleme (brace), Damalie Matama and Resty Nanziri were all on target for Kampala Queens while Elizabeth Anyango and Shakira Nakasango found consolations for the league debutants.

Lango Queens held Olila High School WFC to a goalless draw in Lira whereas Isra Soccer Academy got better of She Mak with a 2-1 victory at Makerere University playground.

The battle for places in the Elizabeth group becomes more intriguing with four of the teams having points in double figures, 3 of which are tied at 12. That is UCU, Uganda Martyrs and Olila.

Isra Soccer Academy and Lango Queens have a game in hand slated to be honoured next week.

Despite being stalled at 6 goals for the past two match days, Juliet Nalukenge continues to top the scorers’ chat while Hasifa Nassuna, Anita Namata and Shadia Nankya come closest with 5 goals each.
