FUFA names 4 man shortlist for Cranes head coach job

FUFA has forwarded a shortlist of 4 coaches to Government from which the next Uganda Cranes coach will be named.

The names were presented to the FUFA Executive after the 5 man Technical Panel assessed the CVs of the applicants for the job.

The list has; Desabre Sebastien (French, 41 years), Johnathan McKinstry (Northern Ireland, 32 years), Emilio Ferrera (Belgian, 50 years) and Moses Basena, Ugandan, 52 years).

Who are they?

Johny McKinstry.

A Northern Irishman born in 1985. He is not new to the African continent after coaching Sierra Leone between 2013 – 2014 where he set the record for being the youngest national team coach in the world. and Rwanda National team between 2015 – 2016.

McKinstry currently manages FC Kauno Zagliris in the A Lyga of Lithuania.

Desabre Sebastien

A Frenchman born in the city of Valence in 1976. He has no much experience in international football but he has immense working experience in Africa club football.

He has coached at ASEC Mimosas in Ivory Coast, Recreativo Libolo in Angola, AC Wydad Casablanca in Morocco and he is currently at Egyptian side Ismaily SC.

Emilio Ferrera

A Belgian former footballer, who currently coaches the Anderlecht U21s.

Ferrera’s most coaching time has been spent in his native Belgium where he held the top job at Wasland Beveren FC, Racing Genk, Club Brugge, OH Louven, LA Lauven and Sporting Lokren.

He has also coached in Greece with Panthrakikos, Panionis, and Skoda Xanthi.

Moses Basena


Born 52 years ago, he is the  only Ugandan on the list and  the current coach of the Cranes , signed on an interim basis after the departure of Micho Sredejovic in late July this year.

He has previously coached at SC Villa, Saints FC, Kira Young FC KCCA FC , URA FC and army side UPDF Fc.

Basena oversaw the Cranes’ qualification to the CHAN championships, and he previously led the Cranes to a 3rd placed finish in the just concluded CECAFA championships.

FUFA and the Government will discuss remuneration of the new coach.

The final process of this exercise will be the naming of the Head coach by the FUFA Executive before the end of the year.
