Fred Atuhwera is a defensive midfielder and the vice captain of Uganda Christian University – UCU.

He is regarded as one of the finest midfielders in the Pepsi University Football League. The 20 year old is yet to feature for the National team but is optimistic that he will at one day achieve the maiden call.

FAMILY BACKGROUND:

Atuhwera is a son of Nabimanya Patrick and Kenyonyozi Annet who are residents of Rukungiri District in Western Uganda.

EDUCATION CAREER

Atuhwera is in his final year at Uganda Christian University, pursuing a Bachelor’s in Business Administration. He began his educational career at Town Council Primary School in Rukungiri District before joining St. Gerald’s Secondary School, Nyakibale. He later joined St. Mary’s Kitende and Kibuli S.S were he had mixed stints for both his O’Level and A’Level completion.

FOOTBALL CAREER :

He began his football journey in his hometown at Rukungiri United Soccer Academy. During his time at Town Council primary he was part of the school team that participated in four editions of the inter primary school competitions.

At St.Gerald’s S.S, the midfielder won the district and regional Copa Coca-Cola trophies and represented the school at the National event hosted by Mvara SS, Arua.

Following his impressive performances, he pleased St.Mary’s Kitende scouts and joined the school before he was sent to Kibuli S.S in 2012 due to stiff competition at the Kitende based school. In same year, he was Lucky enough to win National Copa Coca-Cola hosted in Tororo.

He rejoined St.Mary’s Kitende in 2013 and won the East Africa games and another Copa Coca-Cola trophy.

Atuhwera was sent back to Kibuli and had another year of success, winning his third National title and UMEA trophy with the likes of Fahad Bayo, Timothy Awany, Alionzi Ajaib (URA), Sunday Steve (Kyetume) and Farouk Sentongo (Former Lweza Midfielder)

In 2015, he returned to Kitende and was again instrumental as the school claimed the National Copa Coca-Cola trophy held in Hoima.

Atuhwera won the first edition of FUFA Junior League with Vipers Junior Team during the 2015/16 season.

He also helped Buwekula Ssaza team win the 2016 Luwangula Cup. In 2017, he captained Mawokota Ssaza team but unfortunately lost to Buddu in the quarterfinals of the Airtel Masaza Cup.

Atuhwera was a key pillar as Ssingo won it’s second Masaza Cup trophy in 2018 under the stewardship of Shafiq Bisaso. Last year, he helped Buddu finish third in the same event.

Amidst the unsuccessful Masaza Cup tourney in 2019, he was able to win the Pepsi University Football League and the AUUS games that were hosted at University of Kisubi.

ROLE MODEL :

Atuhwera is a keen admirer of former Uganda Cranes Central Midfielder Tony Mawejje and former Manchester United player Paul Scholes as well as Barcelona holding midfielder Sergio Busquets.

DREAM IN FOOTBALL :

Atuhwera sees himself playing professional football for a top European club in the future. He is also hopeful that one day he will play for the Cranes willing to emulate his role model, Tony Mawejje.

“My dream is to play professional football for a top European club. I also want to play for the Uganda Senior team just like my role model Tonny Mawejje.”

The sporting industry has been halted by the deadly global outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, that forced the Pepsi university football league into a break.

Atuhwera won last year’s University Football League 

Atuhwera however remains optimistic that he will again help UCU to a consecutive coronation once the competition returns after the Coronavirus break.
