Ahmed Hamid Al Tash broke Express’ resolve in the 74th minute to send them packing out of the CAF champions league at the first preliminary round.
The match that was initially scheduled for Friday 17th was pushed 48 hours later under unclear circumstances and this twist will also be called upon in the apportionment and accountability of Express’ heartbreaking exit.
Wasswa Bbosa’s men came into this encounter hunging onto a 2-1 lead earned from the first round at Kitende and they approached the game with their handbrakes on to preserve the lead.
They were however handed a setback when the tireless Godfrey Lwesibawa got injured and had to be replaced just after 35 minutes by Charles Musiige.
George Senkaaba also came on for Muzamiru Mutyaba and the forward almost broke the deadlock for the visitors but his effort in the 59th minute went slightly wide.
Al Merreikh’s opportune moment came with only 16 minutes left on the clock as Ahmed Hamid Al Tash got the better of Joel Mutakubwa to send the hosts on course for consecutive group stage qualification.
Victory against Express FC hands Al Merreikh a date with Zambia’s Zanaco in the next round. This will be played between October 15th and 22nd this year.
