Uganda’s representatives in the ongoing CECAFA Zonal Women’s Champions League qualifiers have lost 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw with Ethiopian champions Commercial Bank of Ethiopia.

Despite putting up a spirited performance, Lady Doves missed out on a place in the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League final tournament following the penalty shoot out defeat.

The Ethiopians came into the encounter as the favourites having scored a total of 24 goals in the group stages of the qualification tournament.

Former Malta based striker Loza Abera Geinore gave the Ethiopians an early lead in the 8th minute of the game with a clinical finish.

The goal was Abera’s 13th of the campaign but also broke Lady Doves formidable defensive record having not conceded a single goal in the first three games.

Star striker Fazila Ikwaput scored the equalizer for Lady Doves with a spectacular free kick in the 60th minute and eventually sent the tie to penalties after a barren extra time period.

Lady Doves had their trust in skipper and goalkeeper Daisy Nakaziro but the Crested Cranes shot stopper couldn’t save any of the five shoot outs by the Ethiopians.

Budding holding midfielder Sarah Nakuya was the only unfortunate player to fail hitting the target. She agonizingly put the ball a few inches above the goal post.

Ikwaput, Joelia Nagadya and Norah Alupo scored their penalties.

Abera, Aregash Tadesse, Birtukan Ware, Alemnesh Asefa and Ymisrach Lakew Legese all scored for the Ethiopian champions.

Lady Doves will have to face Simba Queens in the third place play off slated on Saturday at the Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi.

Commercial Bank of Ethiopia will play against Vihiga Queens of Kenya in the final on the same day and venue. The eventual winning team of the tournament will ultimately represent CECAFA region in the CAF Women’s Champions League final tournament to be held in Egypt.
