Equatorial Guinea booked a quarter final berth at the expense of Mali after winning 6-5 on penalties following a goalless draw in Limbe.
During normal time, there was nothing that was going to separate both sides since the game had very few goal scoring opportunities.
In the shoot outs, Mali’s defender Falaye Sacko missed a decisive penalty as his effort was saved by goalkeeper Jesus Owono and sent Equatorial to the next round.
Hamari Traore, the Malian skipper blasted the ball far wide while left back Massadio Haidara also his effort saved by Owono.
Equatorial Guinea only missed through their captain Emilio Nsue who blasted the ball over the bar and midfielder Pablo Ganet whose strike was saved by the Mali goalkeeper Ibrahim Mounkoro.
Adama Noss Traore, Moussa Djenepo, El Bilal Toure, Aliou Dieng and Mohamed Camara scored Mali’s five penalties on the evening.
Equatorial Guinea scored six through Ruben Belima, Carlos Akapo, James Buyla, Saul Coco, Iban Salvador, Santiago Bocari Eneme.
Equatorial who are participating in the AFCON for the third time in their history, have qualified for the quarter finals in as many appearances.
Nicknamed The National Thunder, they will face Senegal in a battle for a place in the semi final.
The AFCON quarterfinal line up is now complete as Cameroon will take on Gambia, Tunisia will face Burkina Faso and Morocco will entertain their Mogreb neighbors Egypt.
