Ugandan duo of Denis Onyango and Taddeo Lwanga was officially eliminated from this season’s CAF Champions League at the quarter final stage.
Onyango and Mamelodi Sundowns fell to Al Ahly while Lwanga and his Simba SC teammates failed to overturn their first leg defeat to South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs.
Simba bowed out of the tournament despite winning 3-0 in the second leg in Dar es Salaam.
John Bocco scored a brace while Zambian midfielder Clatous Chama scored the other for the Tanzanian champions but their goals were not enough to equal the aggregate after losing the first leg 4-0.
Lwanga was brought off in the first half after a collision and was subsequently replaced by Erasto Nyoni.
Sundowns failed to overcome defending champions at the Lucas Moripe in Pretoria and only managed a 1-1 draw.
Yasser Ibrahim scored for Al Ahly inside the first 10 minutes with a header from a corner kick while Mosa Lebusa equalized at the half hour mark.
Al Ahly, who are coached by former Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane, marched to the semi final with a 3-1 aggregate after winning 2-0 at the Al Salaam Stadium in Cairo last week.
The other quarter final saw former champions Wydad Casablanca and Esperance de Tunis book places in the semi finals after overcoming neighbors MC Alger and CR Belouizdad respectively.
Wydad beat MC Alger 2-1 on aggregate (1-0 and 1-1) whereas Esperance needed a 3-2 penalty shoot out victory to eliminate CR Belouizdad following a 2-2 aggregate draw. (2-0, 0-2).
Al Ahly will face Esperance while Wydad Casablanca will play against Kaizer Chiefs, a side they faced in the group stages.
The semi finals will be played on 18th-19th June and 25th-26th June.
