Crested Cranes inch closer to AWCON qualification after shoot out victory in Ethiopia

The Crested Cranes have eliminated Ethiopia in the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations Qualifiers with 2-1 penalty shoot out victory at the Abebe Bikila Stadium in Addis Ababa.

Uganda came into the encounter with a 2-0 win attained from the first leg but lost the game with the similar margin.

Senafu Wakuma Denise and captain Loza Abera scored the two goals for Ethiopia in the 23rd and 30th minute respectively.

George Lutalo the Crested Cranes coach named almost the same line up that started in the first leg with only changes. Juliet Nalukenge and Sheebah Zalwango started ahead of Sandra Nabweteme and Hasifa Nassuna.

24 minutes into the game, Riticia Nabbosa was withdrawn for Shamira Nalugya.

Nassuna came on for Zalwango in the 58th minute while Nabweteme replaced Margaret Kunihira in the final five minutes of the game.

The full-time whistle saw both sides tied on aggregate and headed for a penalty shoot out to determine which team qualifies for the final round.

Ethiopia scored one penalty, Ruth Aturo saved one while the other three came off the posts.

Uganda scored through Nassuna and Najjemba while Joan Anita Nabirye had her effort go wide. Summaya Komuntale’s was saved.

Uganda will face Kenya in the final round slated for February next year. The winner of the tie will qualify for the 2022 AWCON tournament that will be held in July in Morocco.
