Cameroonian legend Samuel Eto’o Fils has pleaded for a postponement of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in his native Cameroon due to the Covid-19 pandemic that has wreaked havoc globally.

The continental showpiece is scheduled to run from January 9th to February 6th 2021.

“The most important thing is health and the African football authorities have understood that. I don’t see my elder brother Ahmad risking the health of football lovers for the Cup of Nations.” He told France 24.

Eto’o joins Algeria midfielder Adlene Guedioura, a member of the country’s title winning squad in 2019 who also called for the cancellation of the event.

Eto’o is the competition’s historic goal scorer with 18 goals. He is also Cameroon’s all time leading scorer and third most capped player with 56 goals in 118 caps.

The striker was part of the squads that won the 2000 and 2002 Africa Cup of Nations, and was a gold medalist at the 2000 Summer Olympics.

He won the African Player of the Year a record four times in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2010.
