Cheptegei, Kiplimo join Chelimo in the 5000m finals

Oscar Chelimo will be eyeing a podium finish at his Olympic debut

Ugandan long distance trio of Joshua Cheptegei, Jacob Kiplimo and Oscar Chelimo progressed to the 5000m Olympic final due on Friday.

Kiplimo posted a time of 13:30:40 and Cheptegei had a time of 13:30:61 to finish 4th and 5th in heat two on Tuesday afternoon.

Heat two was won by Muhammad Katir from Spain in a time of 13:30:10 while Paul Chelimo of USA was second with s time of 13:30:15.

Meanwhile, Kiplimo’s young brother Chelimo made his Olympic debut and finished 4th in heat one to book a place in Friday’s 5000m Men’s final.

Chelimo had a time of 13:39:07 in a race that was won by Nicholas Kimeli in a time of 13:38:87.

Ahmed Muhamed of Canada (13:38:96) and Kincaid William (13:39:04) of USA were 3rd and 4th respectively.

The top five in each heat automatically progressed to the final and the five next fastest also made it to the Final slated for Friday at the Olympic stadium in Japan.
