Chemutai becomes Uganda’s first female Olympic gold medallist

Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai becomes the first woman to win the nation an Olympic gold medal.

The Ugandan magnificently clinched the 3000m steeplechase gold with a personal best time of 9:01.45 at the ongoing Tokyo games.

The 22-year-old Ugandan out sprinted American Courtney Frerichs with 250 metres to become the Olympic champion at the Olympic stadium in Tokyo on Wednesday.

Frerichs smiled with silver in 9:04.79 while Kenyan Hyvin Kiyeng finished third in a time of 9:05.39 to take home a bronze medal.

Chemutai also become the first Ugandan female to appear in the 3000m steeplechase Olympic final.

The Women’s 3000m steeplechase Olympic final featured eight of the top nine performance so far in 2021.

It is Uganda’s 10th medal in Olympic history and the third gold at the games after John Akii Bua (1972 and Stephen Kiprotich (2012).
