• Morocco 1-0 Togo
Defending champions Togo started their 2020 CHAN campaign with a 1-0 win over debutants Togo in a Group C opener played at the Douala Reunification Stadium.
Yahya Jabrane scored the lone goal of the game through a penalty kick on a second attempt in the 27 minute.
The Wydad Casablanca defender had his first attempt saved by the Togolese goalkeeper Abdoul Moubarak Aigba who had moved off his line before the ball had been struck.
The referee called for a re-take which was flawlessly converted by Jabrane who sent the goalkeeper the wrong way.
The Atlas Lions would have won the game with a bigger margin had it not been the prolificacy of their attackers and the timely responses from the Togolese goalkeeper.
Star striker Ayoub El Kharbi and Walid El-Karti were at fault for failing to convert one of the chances they got on the evening.
Togo also had chances to find an equalizer but Yendoutie Nane couldn’t find target in the 46th minute while Mouref Tchakel had his goal bound effort saved by veteran goalkeeper Anas Zniti in the 80th minute.
Morocco lead Group B which also consists of Uganda and Rwanda who played out a goalless draw in the late kick off.
The 2018 winners will face Rwanda’s Amavubi Stars in their second game while Togo will play Uganda.
The tournament continue on Tuesday with Group D games. Zambia and Tanzania will tussle it out in the 7pm kick off. The second game will have Guinea face Namibia at 10pm.
