Ethiopian female referee Lidya Tafesse Adebe will become the first-ever female referee to officiate a game in a CAF senior men’s tournament.

Tafesse will be the center referee in an all-female match officiating team as Namibia take on Tanzania in CHAN’s Group D at the Limbe stadium.

Tafesse will be alongside female assistant referees Bernadettar Asimenye Kwimbira of Malawi and Nigeria’s Mimisen Agatha Iyorhe as her first and second assistants respectively.

The 40-year-old Ethiopian has officiated games at the FIFA Women’s World Cup (2015 and 2019), the 2016 FIFA Under-17 World Cup as well as the Under-20 in 2018.

She became the first female referee to officiate a game in the Ethiopian men’s top-flight league and her impressive performances earned her a first ever international assignment in 2006 when she officiated an Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Nigeria and Liberia in Abuja.

She went on to progress with the All Africa Games in 2007 and 2011, before going on to officiate the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) four times in a row in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018.

The game between Namibia and Tanzania will be Saturday’s late kick-off played after Zambia vs Guinea.
