Five countries are confirmed to participate in the forthcoming 2018 CECAFA Women’s Championship slated for 19th -27th July in the Rwanda capital of Kigali.

The 5-nation tournament will be played on a round-robin league format where every team will play against each other team and the overall winner will be crowned champions unlike the previous edition.

The development was confirmed by the CECAFA General Secretary Nicholas Musonye in a press conference at the Chamazi Complex in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday.

” Five countries have confirmed their intention and we will host the tournament in a league format and hosts Rwanda is ready to stage a successful tournament.” Musonye said.

The confirmed 5 nations include Rwanda the hosts, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and the defending champions Tanzania.

The tournament returns from limbo since being held in 2016 in Jinja, Uganda. It was postponed from it’s initial dates in May this year due to a delay in reception of the hosting funds.

Striker Juliet Nalukenge will be a mainstay in Farida Bulega’s selection

The Crested Cranes of Uganda will play against Kenya in the opening match of the tournament on Thursday 19th July. All games will be played at the Stade de Kigali.

The Kirimanjaro Queens of Tanzania won the previous edition after beating Kenya’s Harambee Starlets 2-1 at the Njeru technical center. Uganda finished 4th after losing 4-1 to Ethiopia in the 3rd place playoff.
